Global approaches to art and design education
Research Map
2023
GENERAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The research map shows a „research in progress“ on: global approaches to art and design education. It is the outcome of a seminar that I had the pleasure to pursue with students from the HGK Basel.
Together, we explored different art and design schools in different decades and from different parts of the world: u.a. the moscovite VKhUTEMAS (1920-1930), the Black Mountain College in North Carolina (1933-1957), the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad (1961 to today), the cubanian Instituto Superior de Arte (1976 to today) or the indonesian Institut Teknologi Bandung, and many more.
By mapping different design and art schools throughout time and space, we asked:
~ What are the design and pedagogical approaches promoted by the academies?
~ How do the schools respond to the social and political issues of their era and area?
~ How does this manifest itself materially?
~ And how do we look back from those perspectives on our own education at HGK?
To share our "research in progress", we made our Miro-board public by transferring it into the public space at HGK CIVIC. For two weeks, the 4x8 meter large research map took over the entrance hall and presented our adventurous and plentiful voyage through the pluriverse of art and design education.
