I AM
a design ethnographer and research maker cultures in times of polycrisis. In my PhD at the Institute for Sociology and Cultural Organisation at Leuphana University Lüneburg, I explored urban living labs in the rural areas of North-Eastern Germany and investigated how they mobilise design as an agent of eco-social change. I have a background in integrative design, experimental typography and media studies.

Making Blue: Exploring, Mapping, Fermenting
Dyeing with indigo is widespread around the world and each region has its own traditions and myths. As a design ethnographer, I am particularly interested in the craft and history of dyeing blue in Basel, which is closely linked to the development of the chemical industry. With this research, I want to explore the practical and cultural knowledge of „making blue" and integrate it into my design and research practice. The project aims to deepen my knowledge, expand local networks and try out new methods. The research comprises three main areas: (1) Mapping: Investigating the historical and cultural traces of bluing in Basel; (2) Exploring: Excursions to Erfurt and Ticino to explore traditional dyeing techniques and learn from experts; (3) Fermenting: Expanding my workshop to experiment with different techniques.

Funded by the Department of Culture Basel-Stadt.
Period of funding 1.1.2025-31.12.2025.
